Statement of Purpose

The purpose of the American Association of Phonetic Sciences (AAPS) is to support and encourage teaching, learning, and research in phonetic sciences, to promote cooperative research among scholars and scientists interested in this area, and to provide a forum for the exchange and development of information and ideas about phonetic sciences. In this regard, AAPS meets once a year in the fall (usually in conjunction with the annual convention of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association). In addition, AAPS publishes a newsletter in which the current news and business of the association is shared. The AAPS Newsletter, along with this web site serves as a forum for members to express their views on various contemporary issues related to phonetic sciences.

Any individual who has an interest in the teaching, learning, and/or research in phonetics sciences is encouraged to become a member of the association. To join the American Association of Phonetic Sciences, complete an application (click on the "Join AAPS" link below) and submit payment of annual dues. Students enrolled in an academic program leading to a degree related to phonetic sciences at a recognized college or university are encouraged to join. The requirements for becoming an AAPS student member are completion of the membership form, including a signature by the student's advisor/mentor, and payment of dues.
